The Outlook 2016 for Mac Junk Email Filter doesn't stop delivery of junk email messages, but does the next best thing - it moves suspected spam to the Junk Email folder. We recommend you regularly review messages in the Junk Email folder to check for legitimate messages that were incorrectly classified as junk. In the Mail app on your Mac, select a message. Do one of the following: If Mail incorrectly marked the message as junk: Click Move to Inbox in the message banner or click the Not Junk button in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar).Mail moves the message to your Inbox. If Mail failed to mark the message as junk: Click the Junk button in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar). The instruction, ' To classify a message as junk and move it to your Junk E-mail folder, Ctrl+click or right-click a message header and then click Junk Mail Mark as Junk.' Of course sends it to the junk folder. However, it doesn't say that it ALSO blocks the sender.

The Junk E-mail Reporting Tool lets you easily report misclassified e-mail to Microsoft and its affiliates for analysis to help us improve the effectiveness of our e-mail protection technologies. From the Outlook ribbon, you can click Report as Junk, Report as Phishing, or Report as Not Junk to send a report to Microsoft.

In a new blog post today, Microsoft’s Tastia Ebacher explained how Microsoft is handling junk mail on Outlook 2016 for the Mac. As expected, Outlook 2016 for Mac will come with a handful of new features compared to Outlook 2011 for Mac. The upcoming Outlook update relies on server-side filtering for junk mail, rather than relying on client-side filtering. Microsoft expects server-side filtering to cut down on your junk mail, and hopefully Outlook 2016 for Mac will improve junk mail filtering.

Microsoft has also published a comparison of Outlook for Mac 2011 and Outlook 2016 for Mac junk email protection options:
