  • May 20, 2019 The connection failure occurs because Outlook for Mac uses SSL to establish communication with an Exchange server. When SSL is disabled and secure renegotiation is implemented as defined in RFC 5746, Outlook requires the server to be in Compatible mode so that the session can be renegotiated from SSL to Transport Layer Security (TLS).
  • Versions of Office 2019 and Office 2016 will be supported for connecting to Office 365 (and Microsoft 365) services until October 2023. Connecting to Office 365 services using Office 2016 for Mac isn’t supported. That’s because Office 2016 for Mac reached its end of support on October 13, 2020.
  • It does indeed look like Outlook 2016 for Mac (included in Office 365 for Mac) supports Exchange 2010, but it needs to be Exchange 2010 SP3; this means previous Exchange 2010 versions might or might not work, but they are not supported.

As of October 13, 2020, only these versions of Office are supported for connecting to Office 365 (and Microsoft 365) services:

Minimum Software Requirements to use advanced Exchange Features: Outlook 2016; Outlook 2013; Outlook 2010 with KB2965295; Outlook for MAC for Office 365; Outlook for MAC 2011. Minimum Mobile requirements: Windows 8 tablet iOS 5 or later Android 4.0 or later. Exchange versions and Outlook support Exchange support works in the same way, so Exchange 2016 will no longer support Outlook 2007. The only exception to this was when you were connecting to an Office 365 Exchange 2016 server. However, as of October 31, 2017, Office 365 dropped support for Outlook 2007 as well.

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (previously named Office 365 ProPlus)
  • Microsoft 365 Apps for business (previously named Office 365 Business)
  • Office 2019, such as Office Professional Plus 2019
  • Office 2016, such as Office Standard 2016

Examples of Office 365 services include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business.

For Microsoft 365 Apps, you must be using a supported version. For a list of which versions are currently supported, see Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps.

Important

We won’t take any active measures to block other versions of the Office client, such as Office 2013, from connecting to Office 365 services, but these older clients may encounter performance or reliability issues over time.

Impact of using older Office clients to connect to Office 365 services

After October 13, 2020, ongoing investments to our cloud services will not take into account older Office clients. Over time, these Office clients may encounter performance or reliability issues. Organizations that use these older clients will almost certainly face an increased security risk and may find themselves out of compliance depending upon specific regional or industry requirements.

Mac

Therefore, administrators should update older Office clients to versions of Office supported for connecting to Office 365 services.

Upgrade resources available to administrators

We recommend that you upgrade older Office clients to a subscription version of the Office client, such as Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. The most up-to-date subscription versions of the Office client are always supported connecting to Office 365 services.

We provide various services to help you upgrade to subscription versions of the Office client. The following list provides some examples of resources that are available:

  • Microsoft FastTrack, for migration and deployment assistance from Microsoft experts.
  • App Assure, for assistance from Microsoft with application compatibility issues.
  • Deployment guide for Microsoft 365 Apps, for technical documentation.
  • Product lifecycle dashboard and upgrade readiness dashboard, for users of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (current branch).
  • Readiness Toolkit for Office add-ins and VBA, to help identify potential issues with add-ins and VBA macros used in your organization.

Upcoming changes related to connectivity to Office 365 services

Microsoft will release Office 2016 soon, this new Office have interesting new features:

  • The new apps offer full retina display.

After open Outlook for the first time, it's empty.

Is time to configure the Zimbra Collaboration account. Click on Outlook > Preferences and now Click under Accounts

Click on the Exchange or Office 365 option.

If you have the DNS properly configured, just fill the E-mail address, and the Username and Password, you can also unmark the Configure automatically and introduce the IP or FQDN (after put the IP, EWS will autodiscover the FQDN, so the best thing is have the DNS properly configured and use always FQDN)

That's it, Outlook 2016 will sync everything in our account: Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Tasks.

We can see the Outlook 2016 logo and the amount of unread messages:

One of the good news is that all the Contacts, with also the image, will be syncronized between Zimbra Collaboration and the Outlook 2016 for Mac.

All the Tasks will be syncronized as well, we can create one on the Outlook 2016 or in the Web Client, and they will sync between devices.

One of the good points here is the ability to paste a Full Excel content in HTML, like this for example:
